WORKSHOPS
D-Sebecs in Pilates workshops - 21 Aug 2010
|
New South African invention gets to the core of fitness training Pilates enthusiasts could soon find themselves challenged to learn new exercises, using an innovative piece of equipment developed by a South African physiotherapist.
The D-SEBECS, an unstable platform that rests on a flat, disc-shaped base fitted with multidirectional castors, acts like a balance board, with any movement on the platform causing the apparatus to slide and tilt in different directions. The device was designed to improve several biomotor abilities and movement control. The acronym stands for Dynamic, Symmetrical Exerciser to improve your Balance, Endurance, Co-ordination and Stability.
High-performance physiotherapist Ryk Eksteen, who invented the D-SEBECS as an exercise rehabilitation accessory and strength-training tool and tested it on the Blue Bulls, says the body's core stabilisers are best trained when moving in an unstable environment. Core stability involves recruiting the trunk muscles to control the position of the lumbar spine during dynamic movements.
Pilates instructor James Raaff, who studied sports medicine, has developed a D-SEBECS/Pilates workshop, using the balance board to create mat-based exercises similar to those done on a Reformer.
The next round of workshops for Pilates instructors is on 21 August 2010 in Cape Town & Pretoria. Spaces will be limited to allow a high degree of interaction in each class, with a strong focus on correct Pilates form.
The D-SEBECS, which costs under R3 000, will be available at special prices to workshop participants. The workshop fee of R900 includes an exercise manual. Early-bird workshop fee of R750 if you book and pay 2 weeks in advance. Optimizing Spinal Biomechanics in Mat work
|
Back pain affects at least 80% of us some time in our lives. Nearly $90 billion (Germany: EU50bn; UK: GBP10bn) is spent annually by people looking for relief from back pain through surgery, doctor's visits, X-rays, MRI scans and medications. After poor medical assessment, narrow clinical approach and symptomatic focus (rather than functional focus) leaves them frustrated, many sufferers seek remedy at Pilates studios. This presents a dilemma in that Pilates education seldom covers the skills required to deal with situations like these. In this workshop you will upgrade your understanding of spinal biomechanics allowing you to create more specific and effective mat exercises for this population. Very interesting new research will help you understand potential problems that may be caused by some classical Pilates exercises when prescribed for back care. Although rehabilitation is not the domain of Pilates instructors, some Pilates instructors can play a great supportive role in the prevention and treatment of back pain. Do not miss this one!
Workshop dates: 16 October Cape Town, 23 October Pretoria

Pilates for Children - Pretoria & Cape Town TBA
|
IS PILATES GOOD FOR CHILDREN? IS PILATES SAFE FOR CHILDREN? While pilates isn't really child's play, persons of any age can do it, even children, Pilates can certainly be good for youngsters, since babies do it naturally when they learn to roll over and take their first steps. What they are doing without realizing it, is developing core strength, co-ordinating limbs and acquiring movement efficiency. As far as safety is concerned, the principles of pilates are very good for any child. The children's pilates workshop will assist pilates instructors in adapting existing pilates knowledge and repertoire to suit the needs of children. Many other questions will also be addressed, such as age of the child, equipment, accessories, groups, etc.
Please note the entrance requirement of a basic Pilates Mat qualification.
Presenter: Dr Elzabe Havenga.
Workshop times: 08h00 - 13h00.
Early-bird fee R750 if paid 2 weeks in advance, includes a workshop manual.

Develop a cognitive understanding of basic movements. Become proficient in verbal, visual and tactile cueing. Along with the introduction of the use of imagery, trainers will continually evaluate and guide clients safely through the program.
This course applies current research in exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning and motor control theory that is relevant to mind-body exercise. Six basic Pilates principles are introduced along with the processes of mobilisation, disassociation and stabilization. Screening & assessment techniques provide the foundation for safe and effective programming.
Mat based exercises are taught with the six Pilates' principles incorporated into the learning process; this provides a clear understanding of the underlying intention of each mat exercise.
